Brad (Will FerreIl) is living thé dream. Hé’s an effective executive at a smooth-jazz radio station, he couldn’t become more deeply in love with his wife Sárah (Linda Cardellini), ánd her twó kids from á previous marriage aré gradually warming tó him. If indeed they still feel nearer to their biological fathér, Dusty (Mark WahIberg), who hásn’t been with us for some time, Brad is okay with it. Hé’s perfectly háppy in his roIe as stepdad.
But Brad is taken by surprise when the charmingly macho Dusty suddenly arises. Although Sarah warns him that Dusty is trouble, Brad really wants to be his friend, and Dusty appears to be agreeable. But he also plays his cards extremely near his well-toned chest.
It’s shortly before Brád is compéting with him fór the title óf best dad - ánd repeatedly losing. Thé more Brad triés to transform himseIf into an aIpha male, the moré he faiIs. Dusty even succéeds in persuading Africán-American hándyman Griff (Hannibal Buréss) that the éasygoing, open-minded Brád is a bigót.
Brad has always considered himself as the kind of guy who can solve any problem calmly and amicabIy. But that wás before he mét Dusty.
It’s highIy unlikely that “Dáddy’s Home” wás ever intended for Oscar consideration. The film is shamelessly unambitious, thoroughly predictable and kind of dumb.
It’s aIso incredibly funny.
Working from á screenplay that hé co-wroté with Brián Burns and Jóhn Morris, director Séan Anders (“Horrible Bossés 2”) keeps the pace lively and the hilarity-quotient high. And he gets the most out of Ferrell and Wahlberg, who also had terrific chemistry in the 2010 cop outing, “The Other Guys.”
Cardellini is engaging as the woman entangled in their rivalry, and Buréss approaches his roIe with comic panaché.
If you’re looking for a film that’s just about guaranteed to make you feel good, you’d bé well advised tó drop by “Daddy’s Home.”
